Trusting yourself means, for me, saying: “Yes, I can”. Trusting yourself is key to achieving your goals and living in balance and well-being. No matter how much you prepare, how many titles you get, how much experience you have accumulated, if you don't trust yourself, if you don't feel capable enough, it will be very difficult for you to achieve success and happiness.
In my experience, we often have very valuable talents and skills to overcome our challenges, but we can also develop those that we lack. Although many people have a fixed mindset and think that if we have or lack some talents or skills, we should settle because it cannot be changed. I, on the other hand, am in favor of the growth mindset and I am convinced that, with will, discipline and effort, it is possible to develop the skills we need.
In this sense, the doctor in psychology and professor at Stanford University, Carol Dweck, has studied how fixed and growth mindsets influence people's lives and has concluded that those of us who have a growth mindset experience greater success and wellness in all areas of our lives.
So how can we increase our self-confidence? Next, I share with you eight keys that I consider very effective:
Say "enough" to the fatalistic thoughts that lead you to believe that you can't.
Let go of the perception that others are better than you or that you will let them down.
Take the time to get to know yourself and be clear about your strengths. If this is difficult for you, think about the most relevant achievements you have had, such as finishing school, university; getting a good job, being a good daughter, wife, or mother; being skillful with your hands or art, in short, and take note of what qualities any person would need to achieve what you did.
Set very specific, achievable goals and a time to achieve them. I suggest you start with simple things and as you get good results, increase the difficulty of your goals.
Develop a growth mindset. Think that with will and effort you can develop the skills you need.
Get inspired by people who are already successful in what you want to achieve and seek guidance or advice from teachers, mentors, or coaches in the field.
Surround yourself with people who want to learn and advance like you. That will increase your motivation and optimism.
Choose to maintain the right attitude: always positive. If something goes wrong, be compassionate with yourself, forgive yourself and, above all, learn from the experience. Don't be discouraged and keep going. Obstacles are excellent opportunities to become stronger and more resilient people.
Always remember that if we try and it goes well, we celebrate; and if not, we learn and grow. Everything is profit, except not daring to try. So, are you ready to dare today?
